How do you use color in your creations?

Have you ever looked at a color and felt a certain way? Colors have a deep and primal impact on us. Artists can use or subvert these inherent color biases to help convey ideas. In Pixar’s hit movie “Coco”, the main character travels to a unique world called Land of the Dead, which is beautiful and vibrant. It’s a world that you want to see more of. The movie shows how our loved ones aren't leaving us behind but going to a new, exciting place and that death is only truly sad when you are forgotten. During this scene, color is still there, but muted. Color is the great universal language that helps convey emotion and experiences to audiences all around the world.

At Design Works, we use color to convey certain psychology, which evokes emotions, feelings, and also helps to build a brand. While designing the project “Identity,” we integrated some elements of ourselves into it. The thumbprint is from our Creative Director, Cindy Engel, and the main color used is her favorite color, orange. Orange calls to mind feelings of excitement, enthusiasm and warmth. Orange can also draw attention, like in advertising and construction. When asked about why she loves orange, she states, “that it brings feeling of joy and creativity.” The overall scope of the project was to put our twist on what Identity represents to Design Works as a whole and by tying in color Cindy elevated the brand and gave it her own touch of personal, uniqueness.
